This exciting and enlightening trip will offer ardent travelers and explorers a look into some of the most significant and lauded conservation sites in the west coast of Sabah. Kota Kinabalu , Sabah’s capital city, is the main gateway for travelers in the West Coast as Sandakan is for the East Coast. The trip will cover the following destinations: Sabah Museum, Sabah Foundation Building, Unviersity Malaysia Sabah, Klias Wetlands, Kinabalu National Park, Sabah Tea Plantation and a homestay at the Tombung Village. The Sabah Museum is the most prestigious ethnographic museum in Sabah and showcases the rich cultural, social and natural history of Sabah all in one place. University Malaysia Sabah, better known as UMS is Sabah’s own university and is strategically located on a hilly area overlooking the South China Sea. We will visit the University’s Borneo Marine Research Institute, its information centre as well as the university’s museum. The Klias Wetland is one of Sabah’s mangrove forest reserves and is the nearest place to spot the rare Proboscis monkeys in Sabah’s west coast. Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia’s first World Heritage site is famous for its Mount Kinabalu and the conservation work done within the park which protects Sabah’s treasured natural heritage. The Sabah Tea Plantation is the one of the few organic tea plantations in the world surrounded by the lush rainforest near Mount Kinabalu. Last but not least, in the Tombung Homestay programme, you will learn about the Moroli River’s conservation system, based on the native law of “Tagal” or “Bombon” system, while staying with your host family. They will also share with you their knowledge on rubber processing, from the initial rubber tapping to the final process of making rubber sheets. Besides that, you will also learn about the local medicinal plants, traditional animal traps, the Sumazau dance and traditional music instruments such as the gongs used by the Kadazandusun community.
Day to day itinerary
Day 1 Kota Kinabalu
Day 2 Kota Kinabalu City tour – Sabah Museum, Sabah Foundation Building and University Malaysia Sabah. Afternoon, Klias wetland for river cruise in search for Proboscis monkey.
Day 3 Kinabalu National Park – Visit the Park’s HQ and Poring Hot Spring substation overnight at Sabah Tea Plantation.
Day 4 Sabah Tea Plantation’s factory tour – Moroli River to learn about river conservation – afternoon depart for Tombung Homestay.
Day 5 Departure for your next destination.
Day 1 (Dinner)
You arrive today and we will meet you at the airport. Then we will transfer you to your hotel for check-in, followed by a tour briefing from your tour guide. After the briefing, you will be free at leisure for the rest of the day.
Day 2 (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)
On the second day, we will tour Kota Kinabalu City. The city tour includes the Sabah Museum, the Sabah Foundation Building, Sabah State Mosque, and University Malaysia Sabah (UMS). After the city tour, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant. At 2pm, we will depart for Klias wetland for the river cruise to see the Proboscis monkey in the wild. After the river cruise, we will stop for dinner before resuming the cruise to watch fireflies. Later, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Kota Kinabalu.
Day 3 (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)
After breakfast at the hotel, your tour guide will meet you at the hotel lobby at 0730hrs. We will depart early for a 2-hour drive through scenic countryside and mountain range on the way to Kinabalu National Park. On the way, we will stop by the Nabalu Market to bargain for local handicrafts and fruit before continuing on our journey. Upon arrival at the park, we will visit the Natural History Gallery and Sabah Park’s gallery for more information on the abundant wildlife and plants endemic to Mount Kinabalu.
Poring Hot Spring which is located about 126km from Kota Kinabalu. We will also make a brief stop at Upon arrival at Poring Hot Spring, to explore the wildlife endemic to Mount Kinabalu.
Later in the afternoon, we will have our lunch at local restaurant before proceeding for Poring Hot Spring, one of the most visited substations of the park. We will first take the jungle trail to cross a canopy walkway (100 feet above the forest floor) and then make our to the soothing and therapeutic hot springs which many believe could heal certain ailments.
At about 4pm, we will depart from Poring Hot Spring to Sabah Tea Plantation which is about 20 minute away by car.. Upon arrival we will check in at the Rungus Longhouse and then you will be free at leisure. You will be served dinner and after dinner, enjoy a quiet and tranquil night.
Day 4 (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)
We will start our day early for a refreshing morning walk around the tea plantations led by a guide provided by the Sabah Tea. At around 0730hrs, you will check-out from your rooms followed by breakfast at the café. After breakfast, we will resume our tour of Sabah Tea’s factory. On this tour, there will be demonstrations on how Sabah tea is processed at the Sabah Tea. After the Sabah Tea tour, we proceed for Luanti Village to learn about their local river conservation practices. You will be able to experience for yourself the famous Tagal fish massage – the highlight of this visit which was introduced as part of the conservation efforts. Later, we will have lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on our journey for Tombung Village Homestay. The site of the homestay is very thrilling and challenging, where we will cross a 100m suspension bridge across the Kiulu River to reach our destination. Upon reaching the village, there will be a welcoming ceremony by the local villagers, followed by the assigning of host families. After the ceremony, follow your respective host family to their home, and after, meet up at the community hall for a briefing session where you will find out more about the village to familiarize yourself with the area. After the session, feel free to mingle around with the locals for sports or if you are feeling adventurous, try bamboo rafting at the river. At night, we will gather at the community hall for some cultural activities where you will learn how to dance the traditional dances and beat the gongs which are used in many important events in the community In fact, you are even encouraged to perform your own cultural dances for the villagers!
After these activities, retire to your host’s house.
Day 5 (Breakfast / Lunch)
After having breakfast with your host, we will visit the local rubber estate to learn about rubber processing. You will learn about how rubber Is processed from the initial process tapping of rubber trees to the final process of turning the processed rubber into rubber sheets. After this tour, we will return to Kota Kinabalu..
