Danum Valley has one of the most extensive diversity of tropical flora and fauna. It is also the habitat to such species as the rare Sumatran Rhinoceros, Orangutans, Gibbons, mousedeer, clouded leopard and over 270 species of birds, making it a heaven for bird watchers.
WWF-Malaysia suggested that Danum Valley be declared a national park in 1976. The Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA) is a 438 sq. km tract. However, Yayasan Sabah Board of Trustess resolved on November 28, 1980, to leave the area within Yayasan Sabah concession without logging activities for conservation purposes. Thereafter, it is known as “Danum Vallley Conservation Area”.
It is also kwon for research area to scientist for education purposes and a nursery for propagating. The Danum Valley Field Center has evolved into one of the foremost rainforest research establishment in South East Asia. The extensive facilities include permanent research plots and an extensive trail system, well-equipped analytical laboratories, computer and email facilities, a library, climatic station data, phenology monitoring data base, trained field staff, vehicles, and housing with sports facilities.

Should you depart from Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre Area
0600hrs – Depart with taxi from Sepilok Jungle Resort to Sandakan town for changes of public bus to Lahad Datu. Taxi fare around RM 40.00 – 50.00
Should you depart from Sandakan Town
0700hrs – Depart from Sandakan to Lahad Datu via Chin Express Bus.
0900hrs Lahad datu – Fajar : Danum valley field office.
Should you take flight from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu Town
: MH 3016 ETD (BKI) 1210hrs / ETA 1305hrs (BKI) – Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu
: MH 3017 ETD (LDU) 1225hrs / ETA 1420hrs (BKI) – Lahad Datu to Kota Kinabalu
1400hrs – Assemble with other guests for transfer into Danum Valley. Meet your tour guide, at Lahad Datu
1700hrs – Check in to your hostel and ready for night walk. Dinner will be provided.
Early morning optional activities;
- Jungle trekking to waterfall
- Packed lunch & swim at the waterfall.
- Head back to camp. In the afternoon, go for another trek – different trail (2 – 3 hrs)
In the evening back to hostel for dinner. Night drive is optional.
Optional Cost payable at Danum Valley;
Trekking – RM20 per hour
Sunrise – RM 180 per trip with 8 pax
Night drive – RM 160 per trip with 8 pax
Camera Fee – RM 10.00 (small) / RM 100.00 (DSLR)
0800hrs – After breakfast, check out and transfer to Lahad Datu for bus or flight back to Kota Kinabalu.
